The KDIGO Executive Committee convened in Madrid on October 2 for the second of its two annual meetings. During the meeting, Executive Committee members discussed organizational priorities, future topics for Guidelines and Controversies Conferences, and voted on key business matters and policies.
KDIGO also recognized Executive Committee members who are rotating off of the committee at the end of the year, including Jenny Flythe, MD (United States), Masafumi Fukagawa, MD (Japan), Meg Jardine, MBBS (Australia), Markus Ketteler, MD (Germany), and Sydney Tang, MD (Hong Kong).

The KDIGO Executive Committee also recognized Methods Committee Chair, Marcello Tonelli, MD (Canada), who will rotate off as Methods Chair at the end of the year, and remain on the Methods Committee through 2024. Dr. Tonelli served as KDIGO's first Methods Chair, helping to create the committee and the KDIGO Methods Manual for Guideline Development, which provides a comprehensive overview of the processes and evidence review methods that serve as the basis for developing and updating KDIGO Guidelines.

This Executive Committee Meeting also offered the opportunity to recognize and honor Wolfgang Winkelmayer, MD (United States), who served as KDIGO Co-Chair from 2016 to 2023.
“KDIGO is deeply grateful to Dr. Winkelmayer for his remarkable service and enduring dedication to KDIGO and the field of global nephrology,” said KDIGO Co-Chair, Michel Jadoul, MD (Belgium).

His leadership, energy, and vision have set new standards and helped KDIGO strengthen and grow. On behalf of KDIGO and our Executive Committee, I thank Dr. Winkelmayer for his commitment to advancing kidney care and his tireless efforts in propelling KDIGO’s mission forward."
KDIGO Co-Chair, Morgan Grams, MD (United States) added, "Dr. Winkelmayer’s visionary leadership and grace have had a profound impact on KDIGO and the global kidney community at large. We, as a foundation, as well as we as colleagues, continue to benefit immensely from his contributions. As KDIGO Co-Chair, I am committed to continuing Dr. Winkelmayer’s legacy to advance the mission of KDIGO and to promote progress and collaboration in improving outcomes for people with kidney disease around the world."
Dr. Winkelmayer said, "Serving KDIGO for the last several years has been the privilege of my professional life. It has been an opportunity to meet so many colleagues from around the world, make profound friendships, and further the agenda of an organization whose mission I deeply believe in.
The foundation today is different from the one I joined, which is not due to me, but rather an expression of growth in an ever-changing environment for an organization that has remained truthful to its mission. It is the mission that should drive an organization, and we, as the Executive Committee, must remember this every single day, not just for KDIGO, but for the patients we serve at the end of the day. I thank each and every member of the KDIGO Executive Committee for their support of my leadership. KDIGO Signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Asia Pacific Society of Nephrology |

KDIGO continues to expand its efforts to strengthen relationships with international societies by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asia Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN). The MoU outlined several projects and initiatives for the global nephrology community, including educational programs, joint presentations to international congresses and conferences, and other endeavors.
The APSN is a prominent organization founded to advance nephrology knowledge and practice, specifically in the Asia Pacific region. With a diverse membership that includes healthcare providers, researchers, and educators, APSN aims to address the unique challenges and opportunities in this geographic area.
"KDIGO is delighted to expand our close relationship with the APSN," said KDIGO Chief Executive Officer, John Davis. "We look forward to working together on new projects and initiatives, and we're honored to partner with an organization that plays such an important role in improving patient outcomes across a culturally diverse region."
“KDIGO and the APSN have a great history of productive collaboration that continues to grow each year,” said Sydney Tang, MD (Hong Kong), KDIGO Executive Committee member and APSN President (pictured above with Dr. Grams and Dr. Jadoul). “The signing of this MoU not only strengthens our ties but also formalizes and outlines the ways our organizations will work together to improve outcomes for people with kidney disease throughout the Asia Pacific region.”

KDIGO CKD Quality of Care Controversies Conference Report Published in Kidney International

KDIGO announced the publication of the conference report, Trends and Perspectives for Improving Quality of Chronic Kidney Disease Care: Conclusions from a KDIGO Controversies Conference, in Kidney International. The conference was co-chaired by Kai-Uwe Eckardt, MD (Germany), and Holly Kramer, MD MPH (United States). The conference, held in Berlin, Germany, in June 2022, convened a global panel of patients and individuals with multidisciplinary clinical and scientific expertise to examine and discuss best practices for improving the precision of CKD diagnosis and prognosis, managing the complications of CKD, enhancing the safety of care, and maximizing patient quality of life.
According to Dr. Eckardt, “In the last decade, clinicians have witnessed a surge in tools for diagnosing and treating chronic kidney disease, or CKD. The advent of precision medicine offers a promising avenue for tailoring therapies to individual patients, though it requires significant changes in nephrology care.”
Dr. Kramer emphasized, “Exciting strides have been made in CKD diagnosis, and new treatment strategies have emerged since the publication of KDIGO’s 2012 CKD Guideline. The expanded toolkit for diagnosing and treating CKD provides optimism for improved patient care. We now need to fully harness these advances for better care with a proactive approach and recognition of patient experiences to inform research strategies and optimize care delivery.”

The KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation, Management, and Treatment of Autosomal Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is now available for public review. We invite you to review this guideline and share your candid comments and suggestions. A final revised version will be prepared for publication based on the feedback received during this open comment period. We kindly request that you submit your feedback no later than Friday, November 17th.
You can download the KDIGO ADPKD Guideline Public Review Draft and Data Supplement on the guideline website and share comments via feedback surveys. Please note that only completed surveys will be acknowledged.

KDIGO at the ANNA 2023 Fall Meeting |

KDIGO was honored to attend the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) Fall 2023 Meeting, with the session, "KDIGO Symptom-Based Complications in Dialysis Conference - Perspectives On the Experience."
The session was moderated by former ANNA president, Lilian Pryor, DNP, and featured Caroline Wilkie, a patient on dialysis, KDIGO Knowledge Translation Lead, Edgar Lerma, MD, and John Ortiz, DHSc, a patient living with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The presenters gave dynamic, engaging, and moving presentations that highlighted the experiences of people on dialysis, and ways to improve the patient experience. KDIGO Now in Acumen Epic Connect via AvoMD |

KDIGO is pleased to announce that some KDIGO guidelines are now digitally available directly within the Epic electronic health record via Acumen Epic Connect, thanks to our partnership with AvoMD.
AvoMD is a provider of clinical decision support tools that bring clinical evidence directly into the workflows of providers. In the case of Acumen Epic Connect, there is a new Activity Tab in Epic Hyperspace that allows users to interact with AvoMD content that takes into account lab and related patient data as well as user responses to clinical questions to generate patient-specific assessments and plans, which can also include billing recommendations. These capabilities are intended to help standardize care while improving provider efficiency and reducing documentation burden.

KDIGO is actively working to bring the latest recommendations to clinicians and healthcare professionals around the world. There is particular interest already from primary care physicians in this work and to the benefits of early detection and intervention of CKD for patient outcomes.
