KDIGO Announces Increased Focus on Cardiovascular and Kidney Disease Programs
KDIGO recently announced an increased focus on cardio-kidney issues. Having completed a four-part Controversies Conference series on CVD and CKD issues, KDIGO will now develop guidelines on cardio-kidney topics. Several topics will be covered, starting with heart failure in CKD. KDIGO will hold a Heart Failure Controversies Conference in February 2024. That Conference will explore new developments and issues that can be covered by the guideline.

KDIGO Co-Chair Morgan Grams, MD (United States), said, “This is an exciting time for KDIGO and for all of us in nephrology. I am thrilled to facilitate the development and implementation of kidney guidelines and very much support our priority to provide guidance in cardiovascular disease, a core need in nephrology. ISN-KDIGO Webinar: Novel Anemia Therapies
Thursday, July 20, 5:00 PM CEST (11:00 AM EDT)

Hypoxia-inducible factor–prolyl hydroxylase domain inhibitors
(HIF-PHIs) are a new class of oral drugs for the treatment of anemia in CKD patients. They demonstrate comparable efficacy to erythropoietin-stimulating agents (ESA) in anemia correction and maintenance. Despite expectations, they have not shown better outcomes compared to ESA.

This webinar, moderated by David Wheeler, MD (United Kingdom), and featuring speakers Volker Haase, MD (United States), and Lucia Del Vecchio, MD (Italy), will start from a clinical case and propose some points of reflection on which patients could be candidates for the use of this new class of drugs. Register for the ISN-KDIGO Webinar on Novel Anemia Therapies.

Optimization of RAASi Therapy Toolkit

Kidney diseases are intricately linked to increased morbidity with, and mortality from, other diseases and infections. An integrated approach to noncommunicable disease (NCD) prevention and management that recognizes the burden of kidney disease and concomitant co-morbidities is critical to ensure no disease is left behind.

In 2021, the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) convened a group of nephrologists and cardiologists from the American Society for Preventative Cardiology (ASPC), the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (HFA)Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), the Renal Physicians Association (RPA), and the ISN, to co-create toolkits for advancing the prevention and management of cardio-renal complications. The first topic selected by the group for such tools is the optimization of RAASi therapy.

The toolkit on the optimization of RAASi therapy and management of related complications consists of focused and practical infographics, serving as hands-on references for nephrologists, cardiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the multidisciplinary care of patients with cardio-renal complications.
