KDIGO Holds Asia-Pacific Implementation Summit on Diabetes and Blood Pressure in CKD
KDIGO held the Asia-Pacific Implementation Summit on Diabetes and Blood Pressure in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) last month in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The two-day summit, which convened on January 20-21, aimed to address the challenges in implementing the KDIGO 2021 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Blood Pressure in CKD and the KDIGO 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline for Diabetes Management in CKD.

Co-chaired by Sunita Bavanandan, MD (Malaysia) and Angela Yee-Moon Wang, MD, PhD (Hong Kong SAR), the summit brought together over 30 experts from across the Asia-Pacific region, including nephrologists, endocrinologists, health economists, diabetologists, nurses, nutritionists, clinical psychologists, and patients. The primary objective was to identify barriers to implementing the two clinical practice guidelines in the region and develop strategies for improved care tailored to the region's diverse socioeconomic landscape. During the summit, attendees discussed the specific challenges faced in implementing the guidelines in lower middle-, middle-, and high-income countries. They also deliberated on developing a strategic framework to overcome these barriers effectively.

The summit agenda featured plenary sessions, breakout discussions, and presentations on topics ranging from comprehensive care models and cost-effectiveness of guideline-directed medical therapies to lifestyle interventions and kidney disease monitoring. Experts and relevant stakeholders shared insights on national health policies, the cost-effectiveness of novel therapies, patient engagement, and empowerment in managing CKD and diabetes. Key highlights included presentations by Vivek Jha, MD (India) on national health policies and strategies, Juliana Chan, MD (Hong Kong) on utilizing web-based platforms for comprehensive diabetes care, and Surasak Kantachuvesiri, MD (Thailand) on reducing population salt intake to target non-communicable diseases. The summit concluded with a comprehensive review of key takeaways and final remarks from the co-chairs, emphasizing the importance of sustained interdisciplinary collaborations and innovation in advancing CKD and diabetes care in the Asia-Pacific region.

"There are numerous challenges and complexities in implementing guideline recommendations across diverse settings," said Dr. Bavanandan. "This summit provided a truly collaborative platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions and develop actionable strategies to improve the implementation of KDIGO Blood Pressure and Diabetes in CKD Guidelines across the Asia-Pacific region."

"Our discussions underscored the need for adaptable solutions that consider the resource constraints and healthcare infrastructure of different countries within the region," said Dr. Wang. "As the global burden of CKD continues to rise, we hope the insights and strategies generated at this summit hold promise for improving kidney-cardiovascular-metabolic outcomes and reducing disparities in CKD management across diverse socioeconomic populations."
Scope of Work for the KDIGO Controversies Conference on Kidney Disease and Heart Failure Available for Public Review
KDIGO cordially invites you to share your feedback on the Scope of Work for the KDIGO Controversies Conference on Kidney Disease and Heart Failure: Recent Advances and Current ChallengesThe conference will take place in Vancouver, Canada, in March 2024 and will be co-chaired by Nisha Bansal, MD (United States) and Carolyn Lam, MD (Singapore).

This highly interactive conference will bring together key thought leaders and relevant stakeholders in nephrology, cardiology, and other related disciplines, as well as patients and caregivers, who will comprehensively review the literature and current state of understanding in this area and address clinical issues and controversies. The format of the conference will involve topical plenary session presentations followed by focused breakout groups that will report back to the full group for consensus building. Four breakout groups will address pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and clinical trials for patients with heart failure and kidney disease. Each group will cover all types of heart failure as well as all stages of kidney disease. The conference output will include the publication of a conference report that will help guide KDIGO and others on therapeutic management and future research.

The Scope of Work and feedback survey can be found on the conference website. Kindly submit your comments via the feedback survey no later than Wednesday, February 21.

Plenary Presentations from the KDIGO Controversies Conference on Maintaining Kidney Health & Preventing CKD

The plenary presentations are now available from the KDIGO Controversies Conference on Maintaining Kidney Health and Preventing CKD. The conference, co-chaired by Alberto Ortiz, MD (Spain) and Katherine R. Tuttle, MD (United States) in December 2023, brought together a global panel of patients and individuals with multidisciplinary clinical and scientific expertise, including nephrology, cardiology, endocrinology, pediatrics, pharmacology, and primary care to identify key issues in preventing CKD.

The conference explored the current CKD definition and ways to identify and stratify individuals for CKD prevention. The conference also addressed pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to preventing CKD. You can watch all the plenary presentations on the conference website or the KDIGO YouTube Channel.
